Training program
One of the most important objectives of the Club during the winter months is training. The Club is an RYA recognised teaching establishment and welcomes non-members as well as members on its Day Skipper and Yachtmaster courses. These include sessions on navigation, meteorology, boat management and seamanship. The training programme aims to help both inexperienced and experienced sailors gain the qualifications needed to become safe and competent yachtsmen and women.
This year's Day Skipper and Yachtmaster/Coastal Skipper courses started first week of October. Sessions are held once a week and both courses run for about 20 weeks. The cost of the RYA Day Skipper course is £211 while Yachtmaster costs £221, less 10 per cent for club members. The RYA training packs and charts are included in these figures. Tutoring will be by experienced yachtsmen Graham Bush (Coastal Skipper/Yachtmaster) and Rod Richens (Day Skipper).
Other specialist one-day courses are also being planned. These will include; Safety at Sea, Radar Operation, First Aid at Sea and VHF GMDSS radio operator's licence, a legal requirement if there is a radio on board.
For further details or for enrolment, contact Training Officer, David Dodds Email.
The Club is also authorised to conduct practical tests for issue of the ICC, International Certificate of Competence, now needed when visiting many countries.
