The Hebridean Princess is a converted sixty-year old Caledonian-MacBrayne ferry, which specialises in very expensive cruises, mainly in Scottish waters, with only fifty guests. Roger was asked to be the lecturer on a cruise five years ago, which was postponed because of Covid, but he finally made the eight-day cruise in July this year. The theme was convoys, and the principal stops were at Loch Ewe, from where the Second World War Arctic convoys sailed, and Scapa Flow. A number of guests were curious to know what their fathers had done in the war, particularly those who had served in merchant ships. Roger’s father was there too, in October 1939, just before U-47 got in, which will be his starting point…
